Function of the adrenal glands

One thing that vibrantly well people always have in common is healthy adrenal glands. Conversely, chronically unwell people always have low adrenal function regardless of whatever other issues need treating. As Dr Eldred Taylor notes “effective treatment of the adrenal glands leads to optimal functioning of the entire endocrine (hormonal) and immune system. The adrenal gland has a profound effect on sex and thyroid hormones, glucose relations and the immune system”.

The adrenal glands are chiefly responsible for regulating our bodies response to stress. They are also involved with immune response, regulation of inflammation, and carbohydrate metabolism.They produce anti inflammatory steroids (corticosteroids) and the stress hormones, cortisol and adrenaline. Stress, a diet high in refined carbohydrates, excessive caffeine intake, and nutrient deficiencies conspire to ensure that hypoadrenia (depleted or exhausted adrenals) is endemic.

Apart from high stress levels and sugar / carbohydrate cravings, other signs of hypoadrenia include early-morning headache, fatigue, allergies, arthritis, low blood-pressure, thyroid deficiency, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), and candida.

Candida and the adrenals

The suppliers of this product state that “Over the last decade or so we have seen only four people with healthy adrenals and only four people who tested negatively for Candida overgrowth (based on kiniesiology testing), and yes, they were indeed the same four people. This reminds us that the adrenals are an integral part of the immune system. Also, candida can produce adrenal insufficiency symptoms because the candida yeast can bind adrenal steroids, rendering them ineffective.”

Adrenal Function and female issues

The adrenals are responsible for producing 15% of a female's oestrogen, so in the menopausal situation it can be helpful to support the adrenals. Women who blossom during the latter months of pregnancy (often after first having suffered much with nausea) and then collapse with post-partum blues are almost certainly hypoadrenic and benefited temporarily from the baby's adrenal output. In such cases the baby may also be born with exhausted adrenals. This is why some nutritionists believe It is important the adrenals should be as healthy as possible in females wishing to conceive.

The adrenal glands and thyroid deficiency

The function of the adrenal glands and the thyroid gland are intimately interlinked. If one is deficient, the other may be deficient as well. For this reason, it can be useful to take Licorice Formula and Kelp Formula at the same time.

Licorice Formula

Licorice Formula has a powerful tonic and rebuilding effect on the adrenal glands. Although it is useful by itself, it’s also useful to additionally supplement with Vitamin C and Vitamin B Complex (especially B5, and B15). Hypoadrenia can also be linked to a sluggish thyroid, so it may also be necessary to take products to support the thyroid. Equally a sluggish thyroid may be linked to sluggish adrenals – it works in both directions, and is frequently something of a vicious circle, further aggravated where candida overgrowth is also present. Like all botanical and natural remedies, it works slowly and several months are required to see a substantial result in most cases.
