(IU = International Units)
The first reason was that we wanted a product made to our specification, and complied with EU / UK maximum dosage guidelines. In the UK and EU no manufacturer will make more than a 4,000 iu per capsule or tablet product, because the official guideline is that 4,000 is the maximum amount that is recommended. Although there are people who choose to take higher amounts, most of the really exciting research on Vitamin D3 and its benefits on immunity, and there is a lot, seems to be based on individuals taking 4,000 iu per day.
The second reason was that because the previous product wasn't our product, we didn't know the source of the Vitamin K2. This is important because when we did a deep dive, we learnt that Vitamin K2 is unstable and very hard to manufacture well. Many cheap K2 product on the market do not have the amount of K2 claimed in them, and some of them appear not have any K2 at all! We've only come across three manufacturers of K2 that seem trustworthy. Vita Delta found in our Vitamin D3 and K2 product is one of them.
* Note Mennaquin Gold found in the K2-7 products from Microbiome Labs is another one of the three manufacturers we trust.
The third reason is that we think 90 mcg of K2 to 4,000iu's of Vitamin D3 is better proportioned than 90 mcg's to 5,000 iu's. (We are not going to go into detail on this here, as we know most customers don't want to read an entire essay).
A fourth reason is that we've been able to reduce the price. Had we continued with the old product, we would have had to increase the price.
A final reason is that although the previous product was sweetened with what is considered to be a natural sweetener (sorbitol), it was not suitable for people on low FODMAP diets.
In my (I must be honest, non medically trained) opinion not just some but most people are woefully vitamin D deficient - not just in the summer months when the UV levels are stronger enabling more vitamin D to be synthesised through the skin, but throughout the entire year as a result of our predominantly indoor lifestyle. In most cases, we are not "OK" even in the summer. It's just that the situation is even worse in the winter than the summer.
It is my view that that everyone benefits from taking a high strength Vitamin D product, ideally formulated with Vitamin K2. For those who doubt this, I recommend the book "The Miraculous Results of Extremely High Doses of the Sunshine Hormone Vitamin D3 My Experiment with Huge Doses of D3 from 25,000 to 50,000 to 100,000 Iu a Day Over a 1 Year Period" by Jeff T Bowles.
This is one of three products which I take myself, since when I no longer get colds or flu - they just don't happen any more. It's not like I have a particularly healthy immune system by default - at one time I used to get three every year. When I started taking Vitamin C and liquid oxygen, my colds went down from three per year to one per year. Since taking a high daily dosage of Vitamin D, I don't get them at all. Now, virtually all of the research for the more exciting health benefits of taking Vitamin D regularly has been on daily dosages that are quite high - usually around 4000iu. Here is just one example.
Atherosclerosis happens when the artery walls start to narrow and harden, eventually leading to a heart attack or stroke—and medicine's standard response is cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, or bypass or angioplasty surgery. But researchers have discovered that very high doses of vitamin D—six times more than the recommended daily allowance—is "significantly and rapidly reducing (arterial) stiffness," says Anas Raed, lead researcher on the project from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.
The 4,000 international units (IUs) dose achieved a 10 per cent reduction in arterial hardness in just four months when it was tested on a group of 70 African-Americans aged between 13 and 45, who were also overweight or obese. Vitamin D levels of black people tend to be lower because darker skin absorbs less sunlight, a precursor of vitamin D. In their experiment, the researchers tested a variety of different doses of the vitamin for 16 weeks before assessing the stiffness of arteries with the pulse wave velocity technique. Some of the volunteers were also given a placebo, or dummy dose of vitamin.

Vitamin D is involved with calcium absorption, but it is not involved with ensuring calcium gets into the right place in the body (the bones) rather than the wrong place (the arteries). Vitamin K2 is involved with that process and further ensures that when taking Vitamin D3, the calcium ends up in the bones rather than the arteries. Vitamin K2 is believed to have other health benefits in the body, but this is the main reason why we recommend taking them together.
Take one capsule per day. Dosage may be increased as directed by a healthcare practitioner.
